London Congestion Charge Update
New London Mayor changes proposed Congestion Charge increases.
Boris Johnson, the recently elected Lord Mayor of London has rejected plans to increase the London congestion charge to £25 per day for the most polluting vehicles.
The initial move proposed by the previous Mayor Ken Livingstone would have seen charges for vehicles in Band G for cars that produce in excess of 225g CO2/km, rise from £8 to £25 per day. This reversal would also mean that the proposal to exempt lower polluting cars in Band's A and B would also be scrapped.
Following the backing of research undertaken by Kings College suggesting that the new charges would actually increase CO2 emissions due to increases in car mileage, Johnson added "the proposals would have made congestion worse by allowing thousands of small cars in for free" and added that his decision would also save Transport for London something in the region of £10m.
